Planning Scheme Amendment considered by MCC (8/10/14)

The Future Melbourne Committee met on Tuesday 7th October to discuss Agenda Item 7.1 which addressed the motion moved by Cr Leppert regarding the Palace Theatre and local heritage protection.

It was a lengthy and interesting discussion including contributions made by Save The Palace Committee,  Melbourne Heritage Action, National Trust, Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan and music industry expert Prof. Shane Homman. The vote was a close one with the motion being carried 6 votes to 5.

The Lord Mayor and his team voted against ‘changing the rules’ on the developer, even though this same sort of situation has happened before. For instance, the Council voted in 2010 to give protection to the group of nineteenth century heritage buildings at 116-132 Little Lonsdale Street which then prevented the construction of a 30-story tower planned for the site.

Listen to the discussion below. View the meeting Resolutions here. Confirmed Minutes pending.
