Implore Mandatory Acquisition

Before sending any emails, we strongly encourage you to write your own letter from the heart and to choose who you want to send the letter to (email addresses can be found at http://savethepalace.com/?page_id=648). Individually tailored messages generally have a greater affect and we want the people in power to hear what we have to say. This simple 6 step guide is best used as a template.

1. Open your personal email account and proceed to write a new message

2. Copy the following into Recipient field:

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

3. Copy the following into Subject field:

Palace Theatre – Mandatory Acquisition

4. Copy the following into Message field:

“Dear
I am writing to you today as a call for urgent action.

On Monday March 31 the operators of the Palace Theatre entertainment venue in Melbourne’s CBD announced that they would be closing their doors permanently. This came about following their requests, to extend the lease on the building, being denied by the new owner-developer, Jinshan Investments.

This comes as a huge blow to the Victorian music industry and ultimately the State’s economy.

Victoria’s music industry pumps over $1billion into the economy each year. The Palace is a top-tier venue which has had an average annual attendance of 285,000 since 2007. This figure massively overshadows the Greater Melbourne annual attendance average of 30,640 (14.4million between 470 venues).

The Palace Theatre is the last remaining venue in the 1500-1800 capacity range in Australia’s “Live Music Capital”. The loss of such a venue would likely result in international promoters and artists by-passing Melbourne on their national tours.

As the states music industry and ultimately economy faces a huge blow with the loss of one of its most economically viable entertainment establishments, it is imperative that the government declare mandatory acquisition of the Palace Theatre at 20-30 Bourke Street, Melbourne.

This request comes from the voices of over 34,000 citizens whom recognize the importance of such a venue to Victoria’s music industry and Melbourne’s culture.

The Victorian Government has previously stated an objective of developing and promoting a thriving Victorian arts and cultural sector, and delivering this through: Maintaining Victoria’s cultural venues and state owned facilities.

With this in mind I would hope that the Government might consider the Palace Theatre as a viable addition to their cultural and entertainment asset portfolio; which already includes buildings such as the Forum Theatre which is managed under a progressive arrangement with the Marriner Group.

Should the Government acquire the Palace Theatre, I am confident that a similarly successful arrangement with business operators could be found.

I understand that the power to make this happen is not in your hands directly. However I also understand that you have the opportunity to table this idea at any meetings and to really push it as an agenda for the Government to consider.

Yours faithfully”

Done! Although I think Michael O’Briens email is sans the apostrophe. It didn’t send to him the first time, but I took it out and it seems to have worked.

    Done.
Please note that you need to make a single edit to the following paragraph to remove the CAPATILIZED word from the letter. I have CAPATILIZED it so you can see where the error is.

“The Victorian Government has previously THE stated an objective of developing and promoting a thriving Victorian arts and cultural sector, and delivering this through: Maintaining Victoria’s cultural venues and state owned facilities.”

    Good luck with the campaign.
I will spread the word and encourage others to follow suit.

Who in the above list would be the most important? i.e., to whom would a letter regarding the option of Mandatory Acquisition? Matthew Guy, certainly, but who else?

Your local MP is a great person to contact, they are responsible to you and they are less likely to have a hectic schedule and overlook you. It may even be possible to speak over the phone or meet with them in person. Otherwise the Lord Mayor of Melbourne and The Premier of Victoria, it would also be helpful to email Shadow members because we need someone to hold those in power accountable.
